Last Fall Shoals Magazine published an article I wrote titled The Problem with Zinfandel: Why We Can't Get America's Sweethearts in the Shoals. Now we can. Governor Bob Riley signed the Senate approved bill May 14th raising the legal alcohol levels in wine sold in Alabama to 16.5% from the previous 14.9%. This bill opens the door for higher alcohol wines, primarily California wines including Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, among others winegrowers find reach elevated ripeness levels, thus producing high alcohol wines.

MONTGOMERY -- Gov. Bob Riley has signed legislation that allows stronger wine to be sold in Alabama.
The Legislature passed the wine bill last week. The governor's communications director, Jeff Emerson, said Riley signed it into law today.
It raises the alcohol level for table wine from 14.9 percent by volume to 16.5 percent. The bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Steve French of Birmingham provides that the stronger wine can't be sold in convenience stores. But it could be sold in all other businesses that normally sell wine.
